Traffic Lights

Traffic Control Signals

To control and regulate movement of traffic on junctions, the traffic control signals are used which we commonly known as Traffic Lights. There are three colours of traffic lights we usually see at the junctions which are Red, Amber and Green. Each light depicts a separate meaning which is required to be followed by all the road users. These are usually placed at intersections to control the flow of traffic coming from all directions. It is required that the vehicle should move according to the signals indicated by traffic lights. one must focus on the traffic light placed in front in the direction you are moving. Obeyance of traffic signals helps in managing and regulating the traffic, avoid traffic congestion and prevent road crashes. The junctions where traffic signals are installed are generally called as Traffic Controlled Junctions. The purpose of each traffic light is described hereunder:

A motor vehicle facing the red light of a traffic control signal at an intersection or at a place other than an intersection, shall stop the vehicle before the stop line preceding the pedestrian crossing. If the stop line is not marked or, if marked is not visible, the vehicle shall stop before the pedestrian crossing. If there is no marked pedestrian crossing, the vehicle shall stop before the primary traffic signal.
When, at an intersection or at a place other than an intersection, an amber light is on at a traffic control signal, the vehicle facing the amber light shall stop before the stop line preceding the pedestrian crossing. If a stop line is not marked or, if marked is not visible, the vehicle shall stop before the pedestrian crossing. Provided that if there is no marked pedestrian crossing, the vehicle shall stop before the primary traffic light signal unless it has either crossed the stop line or is so close to the stop line that abrupt stopping may result in a collision with the following vehicle.

When, at an intersection or at a place other than an intersection, a green light is on at a traffic control signal, a motor vehicle facing the green light shall:

  • drive the vehicle into the intersection or pedestrian crossing only if the way ahead is clear.
  • move only in the direction indicated by the green directional arrow in case a green directional arrow signal is also displayed by a traffic control signal.
  • give way to any pedestrian, who is within the intersection or at an adjacent pedestrian crossing, and to any other vehicle which is within the intersection at the time when the green light turns on.

When, at an intersection, rapid intermittent flashes of green arrow signal are displayed by a traffic control signal, a motor vehicle facing the flashes of the green arrow signal shall turn only in the direction of the arrow after giving the right of way to pedestrians, cyclists and the vehicles merging in the path which the driver is approaching.

Flashing Lights

Purpose of these lights is to warn the vehicle driver of probable dangers on the road. These signals are placed at medians, service road opening and where traffic merges from subsidiary road to a main road. At junctions during the night the traffic lights are turned off and flashing lights are turned on to warn the road users.

This signal is usually installed where the minor road meets the major road. It is mandatory to stop when you see this light and proceed carefully only after watching the traffic coming from all sides.

When, at an intersection or at a place other than an intersection, rapid intermittent flashes of red light are displayed by a traffic control signal, the vehicle facing the signal shall stop before the stop line preceding the pedestrian crossing. Stop before the pedestrian crossing if the stop line is not marked or, if marked is not visible. Stop before the primary traffic signal at the intersection if there is no marked pedestrian crossing. Drive past the signal or across the pedestrian crossing after giving the right of way to the pedestrians and the vehicles running at the major road.

A motor vehicle may take a left turn and proceed further after giving way to the traffic approaching the intersection from its right side and to the pedestrians and cyclists crossing the intersection on its left side unless a traffic control device or a road sign prohibits a left turn when the red light is on.

This signal is installed at service road and median openings. This signal alerts you to potential hazards on the way. When this light appears, slow down the vehicle and proceed with caution.

(c) a motor vehicle facing rapid intermittent flashes of amber light from a traffic control signal at an intersection or at a place other than an intersection shall slow down and may drive into the intersection or pedestrian crossing with caution after giving way to the pedestrians and vehicles which are already within the intersection.

Traffic Signals for Pedestrians

If you see a red coloured human figure in traffic light in front of a zebra crossing, do not proceed in that direction. Wait on a safe location to turn the light green. Do not try to cross the road from the parked vehicles. If the traffic has come to a halt then move only in the direction where it is indicated by the pedestrian traffic light.
If there is a green human figure is seen front of a zebra crossing in a traffic signal then it depicts that the pedestrian shall cross the road using the pedestrian crossing or the zebra crossing. These lights are installed in conjugation with the traffic signals. When the movement of a traffic is stopped in a particular direction, the road which is free is then opened for crossing by the pedestrians.

Pedestrian Green Light

Traffic Signals for Cyclists

Just like pedestrians, traffic signals are installed at bicycle crossings to regulate movement of cyclists. It is mandatory for cyclists to stop when the red cycle light is on and the road can be crossed when the green cycle light is displayed.
