Headgear and BIS Norms

The protective headgear to be worn by the driver and the pillion rider shall conform to standards as prescribed by Bureau of Indian Standards and the headgear must bear the mark IS 4151: 2015.

On 26th November 2020 the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued an order titled “Helmet for riders of Two Wheeler Motor Vehicles (Quality Control) Order, 2020” vide S.O. 4252(E) stating that:

The helmet shall conform to the corresponding Indian Standard IS 4151: 2015 and shall bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-I of Schedule-II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

The Bureau of Indian Standards shall be the certifying and enforcing authority for the helmet.
