Road Accidents in India – A Snapshot

According to World Road Statistics compiled by International Road Federation, Geneva, India ranks on top in terms of road accidents and number of persons killed every year. A snapshot of road accidents, persons killed and injured in India from 2015 to 2021 are provided in the table. Some important facts related to road accidents are listed below for reference:

• About 85% of road accident deaths occur in developing nations.
• India accounts for about 11% - 12% of the world's total road accidents.
• India contributes only 1% - 2% of the total vehicle population of the world.
• Average 1130 accidents reported daily in India claiming more than 422 lives.
